Why should I seal and insulate my attic ductwork?

What are the problems associated with attic ductwork?

- The attic ductwork system is usually leaky and insulated to R-4 and is installed above the attic insulation, giving minimal resistance to heating and cooling losses through the ductwork.
- The systems will have to run longer to make up for the losses in the attic ductwork.
On a normal attic ductwork installation, the temperature differential from the attic air handler unit to the supply register on the other side of the house can be as much as 8 degrees.
- The attic heat in the summer time will also leak down into the house through the ducts, making the system have to run longer to cool the warmer air.
- In the winter the heat will rise up by stack effect into the supply and return ducts, making attic insulation ineffective. This air will flow into attic ducts and the air handler to be lost through nonexistent or poorly insulated and leakage points in the ductwork.
- The heating system will turn on and off more often to make up for this stack loss.
- Poorly sealed and insulated return ducts allow cold winter air to be introduced into the system, increasing the heating load.
- Poorly sealed and insulated return ducts in the summer pull very hot humid air into the system, increasing cooling and dehumidification loads.
- The size and cost of the system will have to be increased due to the cooling and heating losses through the attic ductwork leaks and thin insulation.
